Response:
According to our officiant, you need to: 1) Obtain license in county in which groom is resident. If neither is resident, then the license may be obtained in any county. Marriage ceremony may be performed anywhere in the state. 2) A blood test is not required in VA. 3) Both parties to the marriage must appear together when apply for license. 4) No waiting period between application and issuance of license. 5) License is valid for 60 days from date issued. 6) Cash only for license. Current fee is $35. 7) Proof of age is required. ID containing photo ID, date of birth, must be furnished (i.e., driver’s license).
Applicants must furnish the maiden name of their mother. 9) Documentation of a divorce is not required. 10) No requirement that witnesses be present at the marriage ceremony. You may want to check with your county clerk’s office to double check. Good luck. Sue & Jeff October 12, 1996 Leesburg, VA

We just got ours last week. You can get the license in any county in Virginia, it is valid for the whole state. No blood tests are required. The license is good for 60 days. You both need to be present, as you need to swear to the county employee that the information is correct, and sign the application. If it is your first marriage, you only need photo ID (e.g. drivers license). If it is a subsequent marriage you may need divorce devree, etc., I don’t know. They did NOT ask any questions about what last name(s) we would be using. Fee is approx $32. They gave us a booklet about birth contol, another about AIDS, instruction on how to change the name on your social security card, and samples of laundry detergent, deoderant, and Oil of Olay.
