Musicians Earplugs – how do they feel?

Question:

Hi – seems like a few people are using the Musician’s earplugs, ER-?? on this NG. I would like to hear opinions on how they feel/how easy they are to get in. I understand they "go past the second bend!" Are they tough to get in/out? Are they comfortable/transparent, or am I going to feel like Checkov in Wrath of Khan when he gets the earwig dropped in his helmet? Anyway, thinking of getting fitted for a pair of these really soon, and would appreciate anyone’s feedback. Thanks David Ingram

Dave, I’ve been using custom fitted plugs for a couple of years.  They are not at all uncomfortable.   They go in the ear easily and are easy to maintain.  You can get different value filters to reduce decibels by either 15 or 25. I got both values, but I’ve never had to use the 25’s. The plugs are not cheap — figure you’ll spend $125 – $150 for the exam, fitting, molds etc.  They are, in my opinion, absolutely worth the investment if you intend to play music with a band or even routinely listen to loud music. How transparent are they?  Better than the foam plugs or other musicians plugs out there, but not completely transparent. What I do is get my sound in the first song and then put the plugs in.  I do have some trouble singing — not staying on pitch myself but blending with the other guys.  We don’t have a sound man and it’s up to us to move in or out on the mike and this is difficult with the plugs. This is just my experience, others may feel differently.  BTW the monitors in most of the place we play are terrible. If they were better, the plugs might not be an issue. GET THOSE PLUGS RIGHT AWAY WHILE YOU CAN STILL HEAR! Regards, Paul

Feel a little awkward till you get used to them, then no problem.  they have a little clear tab that you yank on to get them out.  and if they are fitted correctly, they match your ear perfectly (Duh!) so they are *more* comfortable than off-the-rack plugs… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hi – seems like a few people are using the Musician’s earplugs, ER-?? on >this NG. Any place that sells hearing aids should have them :) (an ounce of prevention…) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Where can I find more info on these? Thanks.
