Pregnancy/babies/cats

Question:

: My daughter has a cat.  She wants to start a family and wonders if the : cat and the cat’s litter will be harmful to her (while pregnant) and the : baby (when it comes). : I told her I’d try and find out. : Thanks for your help As long as she doesn’t handle the cat’s litter or feces, or eat any raw meat, she should be ok, especially if her cats don’t go outdoors.  The big risk is from a parasite called toxoplasma gondii, which causes a disease called toxoplasmosis.   Toxoplasmosis can lead to serious birth defects and also to serious infection in immunocompromised folks, like people with AIDS.  This parasite is passed by eating raw meat.  Cats that go outdoors are more likely to become infected from something that they kill and eat.  And this is one reason never to feed your animals raw meat, and of course, never to eat raw meat yourself.  I don’t care *what* gourmets say about steak tartare: raw meat passes parasites and bacteria!         *Stop the execution of Mumia Abu Jamal: A new trial now!*         Shrine of the Cybernetic Madonna BBS  213-766-1356 "The board that Hates Rush Limbaugh *and* Newt Gingrich With A Passion"
