the red cross issued a statement thanking everyone for trying to donate, they’ve opened up walk in donations at many locations. according to the report, they appreciate the donations now, but will need more donations over the coming days. 10 days seems a world away, but they’ll need blood then too. also, is it really wrong to deny having "fresh" piercings or tattoos with the current need for blood? ~c *** yank ME to reply ***

Not to add paranoia, but if you also infected the blood supply after an attack like this, you could cause a secondary catastrophe. It’s better to let the Red Cross move slowly but surely, than to risk even more lives. Screening takes time and we don’t want to rush an overworked (and probably under-paid) lab tech. Think they’ll be turning away Arabs trying to give blood? Or will they just casually toss the blood when the donor leaves? Kavin

This is one of those cases where my three month old tragi were done a year ago. Yes, the ethics have become situational, and I am operating in a gray area, but I would definitely say it’s not for the weaker side of me. Kavin

That is a nasty fucking remark. Do you think Arab blood is ‘bad’? OR that Red Cross workers are that bigoted and stupid? TQ

yeah, and what if they’re Arab-Americans? i keep remembering that movie with denzel washington, bruce willis, and annette bening where they declared martial law and rounded up all the arabs. i hope nothing like that happens here. what a scary time it would be here in the land of the free. s

Whoa, whoah, whoa, Tab. I set up the last two sentences with a scenario for why we shouldn’t rush any type of testing, just in case. The last two sentences were to get you to thinking about what will happen as the week progresses. By the end of the week we will see just how bigoted this country can be. You were around for the Baghdad incident. I had friends who shaved beards so they would appear less "arabic" — weird considering they were Italian. People refused to get into cabs driven by mid-easterners here in Atlanta. Do you honestly think people aren’t preparing for "what’s next?" And when the Airports open back up, how many people do you think are going to refuse to get on flights because "that person looks like a terrorist?" Don’t think for a moment this country will not wake up tomorrow with a siege mentality backed up by a total mistrust of anyone who looks different. And it will only get worse as the body count rises. And when you have to be at the airport two hours before your flight departs (and no curbside drop-offs). Or when gasoline prices rise again. Kavin

Chill the fuck out, TQ. Kavin might be cold with what he says, but what he says has validity. I thought about the blood pollution angle as soon as I heard the repeated instructions to bring your SS card with you to the donation center. This event was years in the planning. How hard do you think it would be to insinuate a second wave attack of infected donors who are ready to die for the cause? I’m not for a moment suggesting that we treat Arab-Americans badly. I’m planning on waiting until the first bunch of samaritans is done clogging the donation centers. I still don’t know if they even want my post-hodgkins blood because they never returned my call to answer my questions a couple of months ago. I’m not going to stand around at a busy donation center waiting for someone to tell me they still don’t know. When the phones are no longer ringing off the hook, maybe they’ll be able to answer my questions. Jess — "Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names." – John F. Probably not, but you can likely check the donor requirements at http://www.redcross.org If you haven’t figured it out by the time I get back, I will look for you (I’ve organized blood drives and I recall this being an "issue" for permanent deferral). (You may need to remind me). However, I have a friend going in for surgery tonight (in a hospital that has cancelled all surgeries) so I have more pressing items to deal with. I’m glad to see by that remark you ment it as a ‘rhetorical statement’ rather then a gut comment. Things like this bring out the worst in people. There have already been threats against schools and holy places in St. Louis that are Muslim. Exactly the sort of thing you’re talking about. People afraid to send their children to school, american CITIZENS afraid, because of the wackos who infest every city in the country. Gods know the students here at UMR are going to be hard hit. Sorry, Kavin, for seeming to jump you out of bounds, but living here and being around white trash and their bigoted idiocies has made me a little hair-triggered. TQ

Did i say cut-and-dried? Do you know how MANY people they would have to have over here to make a significant impact on our blood supply? That is going a bit far. As you said… "Don’t contribute to the panic. Don’t contribute to the ridiculous conjecture. Don’t contribute to the hate. " Good words. Let’s ALL follow them. TQ

I looked at the requirements for the blood bank in town a couple of months ago when i was itching to donate. It made no mention of anything that pertained to me being a restriction except for the antibiotics. I called to ask if that went for people who take them prophylactically because they have no spleen, and explained my situation. The lackey I spoke with took careful notes and promised I would receive a call from someone by the next day. I received no call, and other things in my life eclipsed the thought of donating blood for a while. Now is not the time to pursue answers. I’ll wait until things have quieted a bit. They’ll still need blood a week or so from now. You should email them. I finally did to get a straight answer about my Hashimoto’s, and an actual doctor promptly wrote me back to tell me it was OK to donate. I’d give you the email address I used for donor services, but their site isn’t coming up. — Amy http://www.wyrdwoman.com/

I seriously don’t have the energy to tell you off properly. I’ve kept to myself the itchy spasmy reactions I’ve had to every single one of your posts since the beginning of time because not one of them alone was *quite* enough to go off on, and because there must be something in you I can’t see if Cat loves you. I promise you, at a later date, when I am no longer too emotionally wrung out to tell you what annoying whiny bint I think you are, I’ll do it. In the meanwhile, express your incredulity until you’re sufficently done. Have fun. I’m too tired to give this the attention it needs. Thanks. i had chemo, but it was over 10 years ago. I may be "clean" now… except that I am on some other meds, including synthroid, claritin, loestrin, and erythromycin. The biggest stumbling block when I called was the fact that I take erythromycin. I told them that I would consider not taking it for the requisite 72 hours if they wanted me to, but not if the only reason they don’t want antibioticized blood is to guard against whatever buggies that antibiotics in the average person would supposedly be fighting.
