I want to thank everyone for all the information that you have sent my way. I’m happy that some people wrote with home remedies.  We are very short on money.  But we do love our cat.  He is getting better. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Other that make sure that your cat have got all vaccinations, I would > suggest you to try to clean the wounds with deluded Tea Tree Oil. 1 drop to > 1 pint water, it makes infections go away very fast. Not wanting to jump on the "take him to a vet" bandwagon, but if it’s really been that long, I think you should. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >My cat got into a fight with an unaltered male.  I cleaned his wounds, >that were mostly under his chin on his neck ( bite marks ), 3 times a >day for about 1 1/2 weeks.  It was looking great.  Now more than a month >later, it is looking like an abrasion.  It bleeds lightly.  I’m not sure >what I have going on.  I don’t do the vet thing unless truly necessary. >The vet in our small town rakes in the money.  He wants $100 just to >clean a small absess.  I have an extremely mellow cat.  He lets me do >almost everything to him.  What should I do?

If it’s an abscess, it will smell bad.  It’s gross, but sniff it up close to check.  An abscess smells like a bad tooth.  He could be scratching it because it’s healing up, scratching the scabs off.

Response:

Hi, Well I would take him to the vet.  Is there only one in your town or can you try going to someone else?  It’s possible the bite site has become abcessed and needs to be drained and possiblly treated with antibiotics.  If its not healing, something is wrong.  Has your cat been vaccinated for Leukemia, Distemper and the Herpes & Calici Viruses?  Unfortunately feline AIDS (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) is transmitted through cat bites from infected cats and there is no cure, although with good care an infected cat can live a long time.  This is one of the reasons I keep my 9 cats indoors. A compromised immune system might be causing a slower healing process.  You need to have your kitty checked out and possibly tested for FIV. If you want to know more about FIV you can find information at the Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Mike’s, PetZone, Feline Advisory Bureau and Cat Fancier’s sites.  All of them are linked on this single page:  http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/9352/catlinkspage.html Just click on each link and check the Table of Contents. Please have your kitty checked.  Hopefully its something that can be easily treated. — Tally’s Page Tally’s Tales, Cat-Links and More! http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/9352/index.html

My kitties used to go out years ago and my males always got bit. A vet tech friend showed me how to draw an abcess out by applying hot compresses and to clean the wound and keep it open. One day this didn’t work, after a week or so the abcess healed over and re-infected. That was about 15 years ago and the vet charged over $80 and kept him all day. I figured there could have been a piece of tooth in the wound, and the abcess would never heal. After all of this time (more than a month) if the abcess has healed over and it’s still bleeding something is going on inside and a trip to the vet is necessary. Please take him to a vet for treatment, a $20 increase after a 15 year period sounds reasonable to me. — "I am the voice of the voiceless, Through me the dumb shall speak, Till the deaf world’s ears be made to hear, The wrongs of the wordless weak." ~ Ella Wheeler Wilcox
