What kind of IBS is this?????

Question:

> OK, overdiagnosis man, the other option if your butt itches is that > you haven’t cleaned yourself properly.  Wash carefully and see how you > do.

Or it could be worms :o ) or candida, or allergy, or, or, or.  Butt itch is very common and usually harmless, though not nice.

Response:

I was tested about two years ago. THere was no damage and my symptoms have not gotten any worse, except for the development of a new symptom I didnt have at the time – the strange stomach noises. Other things, like the fatigue and flu-like feelings, might even be a little better than they were then. Not much. I was consuming a gluten filled diet at the time and my whole life prior to diagnosis. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Annemarie, were you biopsy diagnosed? No problem glad to help.  You might ask you gi dr about physical therapy for the pain you get at you incision site.  I learned a lot when I went on how to relax my muscles and help move the pain somewhat.  Also I too have a tolerance to medications and I go to a pain management dr to help me deal with the pain. No biopsy.  Family thing.  My niece was the first to be diagnosed, she was very sick in Australia (I’m in New Zealand)  Her mother was very worried and we both tried to work out what was wrong with her.  I had heard of celiac disease and thought it could be that so did internet searches.  What I found not only corresponded strongly with her, I ticked off lots of the symptoms myself.  So I went gluten free (silly me) then a month later had the blood test.  It came back negative, but only just.  My daughter had a positive blood test.  My doc (sensible woman) said that I either had celiac disease, or gluten intolerance and the treatment was the same.  When I made mistakes I had severe pain so there is no doubt that gluten is bad for me. My niece was biopsy diagnosed.  Of the rest of the family, my dad, and two sisters also have it.  We are sure there are others but they are not yet ready, or sick enough to face up to it. I have talked to lots of people and it takes time to come right.  One friend said for her it took about two years.  One woman I met had to go on steroids to aid the healing.  I guess after years of damage it takes time to heal. When you were tested were you gluten free already? Annemarie

Patrick have you had any surgeries?  I got diagnosed with Celiac then tested (my gi was a slow ranger! LOL) to get a diagnosis of what my problem was.  I went on the diet for celiac and found nothing different and then the tests proved I didn’t have Celiac found out over a year later with surgery that it was CD.  I drink a lot of water and liquids and my meds and try to eat natural fibers in veggies which has helped with the stinkies most of the time.  I still eat sugars and dairy which I did stop to see if it made any difference with me and it didn’t.  I do find the sometimes fresh fruits and even fruit juices give my system a bad smell and lots of noise.  I read that Celiac will also cause bad breath but I can’t remember where I saw it at. But from what I remember, and if I find my link I’ll post it, there is a breath test to see if you are reacting to glutten also you can be tested to see for lactose intollerance.  I had all the tests done and I don’t have a problem with it.  I try not to remove too much from my diet so that I have a chance to eat naturally more.  I do have malabsorptions at times but I have been ok now for a good 6 months by just trying to get good things into me. UM MOM Susan

Thanks Mark, I dont think know about bacterial overgrowth but when I eat high fiber breakfast cereal like All-Bran or take psyllium powder, I dont get the butt itching and discomfort at all. In fact – and WARNING this is gross – when I eat All-Bran cereal I dont even have to wipe!!!! I do wipe, but I dont have to if you know what I mean, there just isnt anything there! How weird is that? (There’s a question for our resident genius KMottus!!!!) I’m not eating All-Bran since I’m trying a gluten-free trial but boy do I miss my All-Bran. As far as gastroenterologists, I wouldnt think of trying all this stuff until getting thoroughly checked out, which I have. I’ve had several colonoscopies and endoscopies plus biopsies and blood tests in the last few years. Other than mild gastritic, no pathology comes up. Hi Susan!  What is the miligrams of the Bentyl you are taking?  I take the 20 mg and take it (now only when needed) 15 to 20 minutes before I eat.  I also have the Levbid, which I now take when needed, which helps.  I am on both if I am severe since I had surgery. When I am bad what I do is take the Bentyl 20mg before I eat, and then if I still have problems I take the Levbid 15 -20 afterwards.  It doesn’t stop it all but I can tell it does ease it a lot compared to not taking it.  Sometimes the medication is helping but since you are taking it you really can’t tell.  UM MOM Susan

Hi Mary & Susan & Patrick — Since you were talking abou Bentyl – I thought I would ask a question of my own – I am not really altogether sure if the Bentyl helps me or not. Is it meant to be taken over a period of time before it helps with symptoms? My GI doctor now has me on it 4 times a day. Unlike my Pentasa & 6mp, this one was rather arbitrary, I think.  My GP had prescribed it before I went into the hospital and I noticed that it did nothing to keep me out of the hospital, so I wonder how well it works. If  your butt iches, it’s a clear sign that  you have a bacterial overgrowth in your intestines, probably candida. I got rid of that with a sugar-free diet, hydrochoric acid+enzyme supplements, garlic and other anti-fungal herbal teas. I want to reiterate my previous advice, go and see a gastroenterologist, your digestive system clearly isn’t working and it can be quite dangerous since no matter how good the food is you eat, you’ll still suffer from malnutrition if you can’t absorb adequate vitamins and minerals. Cheers, Mark.

I’m no expert.  I have read some of your other posts. I think You have been tested for celiac disease and had a negative result? Say you are on a low allergy gluten free diet? One thing I picked up here, bran is usually wheat bran? Your other symptoms sound very much as though they could be celiac disease or gluten intolerance.  I believe 20% of celiacs have constipation rather than diarhea (I am never sure of the spelling of that darn word) anyway. For all but the most severely affected person in our family with celiac disease constipation is our problem. I assume you are dairy free.  I think Dons idea of being completely grain free for a while is probably a good idea.  Get your roughage from prunes or the like :o ).  Many celiacs, or gluten intolerant people apparently need a completely grain free diet for a while. Gas has certainly been a problem with me, but before going gluten free and for a few months into the diet gas caused pain! I have been gluten free now 2yrs and 2 months :o )  Yes counting It is only in the last 4 or so months that I have really begun for feel well.  Before that on the gluten free diet I did not feel sick, but not well either, energy, well being, optimism, enjoying my body, losing weight. I was one of those celiacs who was a little overweight, though never obese. You are going through a rough time, I hope you find the answers to your problems and find good health soon. Annemarie

Yes, it does. Remaining hydrated is essential to passing solid stools. As stated, oil will not mix with water. Also, the enzymes in the intestines are probably similar to water in that they will not mix with oil, and your body is, what, 90% water in composition? I can cause or prevent D by varying my oil intake to prove it does have an affect. If you’ve got IBD, drink some castor oil (you’ll be fine). You’ll soon see what I mean.

Nice to meet ya. Glad I could help. Sounds like you’ve been thru a lot considering the time frame that you’ve been diagnosed. I am very empathetic of your situation. I may be young (22 years), but i’ve got the body of a 90 year-old. Disease SUCKS. This newsgroup is awesome. You’re right, it’s generally not fitting with ettiquette to talk about our problems with people in the real world, lest they get some type of mental-picture of something that they should be very thankful they don’t need to deal with. But that’s not usually the case. They’ll usually just get grossed-out. That’s what makes this group so great. Everyone here’s probably heard about everything or had it, and there’s nothing to be embarassed about. I’m not very good at taking care of myself, because I am careless in my eating and I am reluctant to get medical treatment until it’s absolutely necessary to prevent death. However, I can offer this simple dietary advice, which has helped me considerably thru the years : Drink plenty of fluids, preferrably AS MUCH clear liquid as you can ; stay away from grease and oils ; stay away from very dark liquids like coffee, and caffinated drinks. As for specific foods, you’ve just gotta experiment and discriminate by pain, and obviously, don’t go out eating anything spicey like suicide wings (strange how hot-sauce can cause so much D!). Follow these simple rules and you may find that your pain decreases a bit and you may develop more-managable bowel movements. Be well

No, only the sulfur gases are actually toxic. Carbon dioxide may have metabolic effects. The others are largely harmless. > almost as severely as wound and sore complications. Over-the-counter gas- > prevention aids are usually sufficient in dealing with gas. Bean-o is one > such product.

Over the counter aids are generally useless: Simethicone and similar compounds merely prevent gas from mixing at the surface of a liquid. How that could of any benefit is not clear. Charcoal does not affect gas when the charcoal is consumed orally. It appears to lose this ability because it gets wet in the gut. Beano has also been tested and found unable to prevent gas production as the company claims. > strange reason. I suppose it has something to do with a reaction with > intestinal enzymes. That oil and water does not mix doesn’t seem to have any relevance insofar as your symptoms are concerned. It’s not clear about the symptoms. It might have something to do with bile acids not being reabsorbed.

Yes, it was CG — thanks for taking the time to talk about your experiences with that. Goodness knows, this NOT a subject we can easily talk about to other friends  and such, just by virtue of how unpleasant it is. Like about how the gas can cause pain to tender, irritated intestinal lining. I really appreciated your input. This is a very strange case of IBS that I have. Most of my life I’ve been incredibly gassy, farting all the time. A few years ago the gas changed, almost overnight, to that which can peel paint, if you know what I mean. Last year my digestive system started making all kinds of noises a lot of the time, gurgling, sloshing, swishing, not seeming to correlate with eating or not eating. Those are the most striking samples. Other than that, as long I avoid greasy foods and get plenty of fiber such as psyllium or bran cereal, my b.m.’s are quite normal and regular. Greasy foods and caffeine give me cramps and very loose stools if not full on Big D. If I dont have psyllium or bran cereal everyday I’m struggling to get out these tiny little very unsatisfactory poops and my butt itches. However pretty much no matter what, good b.m.’s or not, the gas and noises remain. Very strange. Wouldnt you say?

If the lining of your intestines is aggrivated, gas will hurt. Gas hurts me almost as severely as wound and sore complications. Over-the-counter gas- prevention aids are usually sufficient in dealing with gas. Bean-o is one such product. I have IBD, the lining of my intestines is very scarred and aggrivated, and I therefore cannot eat most foods cooked in any type of oil without experiencing great pain. Even chineese foods, like my favorite Lo Mein, is unacceptable because of the oil. It also causes loose stools for some strange reason. I suppose it has something to do with a reaction with intestinal enzymes. Just remember that WATER is an essential part of HEALTHY digestion, and OILS DON’T MIX WELL WITH WATER. Take a cup of water and pour some canola oil into it to see what I mean. No matter how hard you mix it, the oil will not dissolve into the water and will remain separate. Small amounts of natural grease in foods such as in beef doesn’t seem to bother me all that much. The emphasis seems to be on oils as far as pain and loose stools are concerned. The gurgling noises could be anything, really. Sometimes my doctor says they are good, sometimes bad. It could simply be a gas buildup that suddenly shifts position in your intestines, or it could be a stool blockage, or stool buildup movement. If these noises are accompanied with considerable pain, it may be wise to see a doctor to verify that it is not a blockage. It is possible that your intestines could rupture from a blockage, But, it doesn’t sound like such in your case. Hope this was informative.
