Wrong Again

You are all wet once again, Denna, > Gentle Leaders and prong/pinch collars, as well as choke collars, are > all very good training aids, meant to temporarily get the attention of > an out-of-control dog in order to more quickly and effectively teach > it how to behave on a leash.

No, the GL is nothing like the choke or pronged collar. The GL uses pressure points in the nose to calm the dogs down. Choke collars and spiked collars are used to inflict pain, and most often agitate the dog and inhibit the learning process. > All are painless and humane if used correctly,

You are full of crap. They create stress and anxiety that manifests in other malbehaviors as a transfer or substitute anxiety relief mechanism. That’s what they do. Never heard of that? There’s lots you haven’t heard of yet. > and can cause injury if used incorrectly.  It is very > important to use these devices in conjunction with obedience training, > as they are NOT permanent solutions;

Actually, if you understood why the GL works, then you’d understand that it will be a self eliminating training aid. It doesn’t just work on the behavior, it works on the entire dog. > the dog will eventually learn to ignore all of these temporary fix

devices. No, it’s the devices that complicate the learning process, and cause aversions to the commands. That’s why you fools take forever to train your dogs. You jerk the training right out of the, and create stress that causes other behavior problems. You work harder  and harder, and keep getting results with the problem you solve, but then have to work harder on the problem you’ve created. It’s a vicious cycle, that never ends with you people. That’s why you all agree that constant reinforcement is necessary Constant reinforcement through corrections is necessary because you haven’t really trained the dog, only forced control. That’s what you know, that’s what you think is right. You were taught that way. You were taught wrong. > It is also very important > to have someone with experience using these devices show you the > correct usage, or the result could be injury, or an even more > uncontrollable dog than you started out with.

That’s what happens most of the time when you force train a dog. One problem is replaced with another until the dog finally gets aggressive, then you blame the genetics, or inconsistent corrections, and all the other tripe you people are fond of. > I would suggest enrolling your dog in a good obedience class.  The > classes will permanently teach your dog acceptable behavior (assuming > you do your part, of course. ;-)

Yes, jerk the dog around for one or two years. Maybe forever. > ), and the instructor will be able to > tell you if a training aid is needed, and how to correctly use it. > Good luck!

I wouldn’t. There are not too many good training classes around. The lack of competent trainers is obvious to anybody that’s been around for awhile. Any trainer that is going to recommend a spiked or choke collar is incompetent and probably abusive as well, and may ruin the dog. Fear, force, confrontation, leash corrections, shaking, scolding, punishment and food bribes are counter productive to the learning process. If you have to do things to train your dog that you would rather not have to do, then you shouldn’t be doing them. You like putting a choke collar on and jerking the dog around? You like scolding, punishing and correcting your dog?  You like spending months possibly forever teaching the dog to come? I teach my students to teach their dogs to come reliably on the first lesson, and they never need any leash corrections, force, fear, food bribes, choke collars, or mindless hours of constant corrections, forced repetition, and scolding. Consistent, positive reinforcement and praise are the only effective tools that will permanently improve your dog’s behavior. You can get all the information you need to properly handle and train your dog using non force, non confrontational, scientific and psychological behavior modification and conditioning techniques, from the Wits’ End Dog Training Method manual available for free at http://www.doggydoright.com BEWARE the forgeries to confuse you, and the warnings offered to you from our rpdb Gang Of Thugs regarding killfiling my posts and the Wits’ End Dog Training Method manual. These people are frantic at the thought of not having anymore EXCUSE for being able to jerk, choke, and hurt dogs on pronged, choke, and electronic shock collars. You cannot trust your dog’s well being to people who tell you to killfile my advice…and tell you to punish, confine, and confront yourdog’s behavior problems. Our Gang Of Thugs are easily identifiable by their warnings about my posts, and their killfile instructions to prevent me from EXPOSING THEM as the vicious, abusive, cretins they are,AND WANT YOU TO BE, so they don’t look out of sorts. If you have a dog trainer that tells you to jerk your dog around, choke him, pinch his ears, or twist his toes, shock, shake, slap, scold, hit, or punish him in any manner, that corrections are appropriate, that the dog won’t think of you as the punisher, or that corrections are not harmful, or if they can’t train your dog to do what you want, look for a trainer that knows Howe.
