African Suffering (Was: Are High IQ Kids More Sensitive?)
Question:
>> Ah so all of Africa is the same culture??? >You want to know something? >I don’t give a sh*t about Africa. >If they ALL die of AIDS I would not lose 5 minutes sleep.
John, human life began in Africa, in the Rift Valley of east Africa. Your forebears migrated out of Africa and slowly discovered the rest of the world. Genetic variation among humans in Africa is bigger than in all other continents combined. You and your ancestors are essentially African emigrants, later European emigrants. But the African savannah is the landscape that’s still burned deep into your genes. I have talked to many people who visited the place of human origin once, then told me that they feel an inexplicable attraction to that place. Many, if they can afford it, go back whenever they can. Africans today have drawn the short straw in the world. Their continent, from today’s point of view, combines all the disadvantages a continent can have, tropical diseases like malaria just being one of them. (Jared Diamond’s book "Guns, Germs, and Steel" explains it in fine detail.) To give you the benefit of the doubt, I believe that your remark above was written in a bad mood and does not reflect what you normally think, because I cannot believe that any human being can genuinely see other people suffer without feeling at least a trace of empathy. True, there are some Africans who make matters worse, but there is the silent majority of good and friendly people who do not deserve what they get. Hans-Georg — No mail, please.

Oh, I feel a "trace of empathy" but I don’t lose sleep! > True, there are some Africans who make matters worse, but there > is the silent majority of good and friendly people who do not > deserve what they get.
There are "some" who make matters worse? Wake up and smell the coffee! AIDS is a STD. The "friendly people" who get AIDS were just a little too friendly. Anyone who doesn’t make this point first and foremost isn’t interested in slowing down the spread of HIV; he is only interested in making political capital. BTW: It really doesn’t matter WHERE man got his start. Why do you throw in such stuff?

I agree with what Hans-Georg so eloquently put. Africa is a great continent, full of great people who really are alive "here and now". George (UK)

Yeah! Way to go! Wake up a long dead thread! So, then, is it true that the less sleep one has the more indifferent one is to the health of those now living at the source of humankind?
