Hepatitis C — Here they go again!

Question:

Guess what this is all about:    "The rate of HCV infection in the United States     is four times that of people with HIV, but     federal HCV funding is only a fraction of the     $1.4 billion spent on AIDS in 1994." and    "HCV has such wide genetic diversity that creating     a broadly effective vaccine may be difficult." Answer: They are getting ready to dump the protease inhibitors on the hepatitis market! This was obvious from press releases many months ago. Since these drugs are already approved, the doctors can prescribe them for any disease they like, not just HIV! Looks like the drug companies manipulated the dumbass AIDS "treatment activists" once again folks! This makes one wonder if the protease inhibitors were developed for HIV in the first place — or did the drug companies take advantage of all the cheap lab rats who volunteered because their doctor or local drug activist organization told them it was "good" for them? Once the AIDS activists got into their predictable and tiresome act, the FDA caved — the conservative pro-business Congressional pressure did the trick — the activists were left believing that they were the reason for fast approval. What fools! After Hepatitis, they are planning to market the protease inhibitors for other diseases. You can just imagine the possibilities: psoriasis, asthma, etc… fred ===== "Looming Hepatitis C Epidemic Sparks New Research" Scientist (12/08/97) Vol. 11, No. 24, P. 1; Bunk, Steve      Nearly 4 million Americans are infected with the hepatitis C virus, according to federal health officials, but the American Liver Foundation says that annual federal government funding for HCV research is only about $11.9 million.  The rate of HCV infection in the United States is four times that of people with HIV, but federal HCV funding is only a fraction of the $1.4 billion spent on AIDS in 1994.  Most HCV carriers do not know they are infected, although 85 percent of those with acute HCV infection develop chronic disease.  Currently, Hoffmann-La Roche, Amgen, and Schering-Plough are producing three combinant forms of the natural antiviral glycoprotein interferon, all of which have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of HCV infection.  The companies are taking a cue from the success of the HIV protease inhibitors to look for something similar for HCV, although the search for HCV protease is proving even more difficult than it did for HIV, according to Hoffmann-La Roche’s Whaijen Soo.  Furthermore, HCV has such wide genetic diversity that creating a broadly effective vaccine may be difficult.
