Juli and Lupus

Question:

> Lupus is an auto-immune disorder, like AIDS, but it is not > contageous.  It seems to be caused by heredity, drugs, stress, > and age, in various combinations.  People with lupus, who tend > to be women, suffer painful conditions of the skin and/or joints, > and can become lethargic at times.  Ultimately, the disease can > be fatal, although treatment has improved a lot in the past > decade.

FYI, this is incorrect.  Lupus is *not* like AIDS. AIDS is an immune-deficiency disorder; in other words, the immune system loses its ability to fight off infections.  Lupus is an autoimmune disorder, which means that the immune system mistakes tissues in the body for infectious agents and starts to attack these tissues. — The opinions expressed are my own and not those of my employer.

Response:

Lupus and AIDS are both auto-immune system diseases.  They are not identical in manifestation, i.e. AIDS (Auto Immune Deficiency Syndrome) sufferers have insufficient auto-immune response, while Lupus sufferers have an auto-immune system that does not differentiate between foreign tissue and the body’s own tissue.  Obviously, these are both indicative of auto-immune malfunction. The is an immune system. There is NO autoimmune system.  They are not >identical in manifestation, i.e. AIDS (Auto Immune Deficiency Syndrome) >sufferers have insufficient auto-immune response,

They have insufficient IMMUNE response.  while Lupus sufferers >have an auto-immune

IMMUNE system system that does not differentiate between foreign >tissue and the body’s own tissue.  Obviously, these are both indicative >of auto-immune malfunction.

IMMUNE malfunction.

First rule in correcting things is to get your facts straight. 1.  AIDS= ACQUIRED (not Auto) 2.  AIDS is an infectious disease caused by the DESTRUCTION of the immune system by HIV.  It isn’t an auto-immune disease. Andrew Albright
